Central Asia in Chinese Media is a project focused on the Chinese media and how they deliver the news and events concerning Central Asia to their domestic audience. This monitoring project offers a weekly bulletin of the most notable topics discussed by the Chinese media covering Central Asian domestic and regional politics, economy, and security, as well as the BRI-related projects and activities in the region.
This past week, Chinese media outlets reported on the celebration of Turkmenistan’s 27th Anniversary of Neutrality, The 10-day trip of representatives of industry-leading enterprises from Xinjiang to Central Asian countries, seeking business opportunities, China's request for the Afghan interim government to take strong and resolute measures to ensure the security of Chinese nationals, institutions, and projects in the country, and, The first trilateral summit between the leaders of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan held in Avaza.
This past week, the Chinese media reported on the first official visit by the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias to Kazakhstan, Export tariffs to be imposed on sunflower seeds originating from Kazakhstan by January 2023, Uzbekistan’s plans to import gas and electrical power from neighboring countries under commercial contracts and not through any alliance or union, and the visit of Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua to Uzbekistan.
This week, Chinese mass media reported news on the Asia gas pipeline transporting over 40 billion cubic meters this year, the efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia in various fields, the messages of condolences from world leaders to Xi Jinping over the death of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, and the virtual meeting between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov.
This past week, most Chinese media reported on the congratulatory message from the Chinese President to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on his reelection as President of Kazakhstan, the second China Xinjiang-Kazakhstan Entrepreneur Cloud Matchmaking Conference held online, the 14 agreements signed to further expand Uzbekistan-France relations, the construction of China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway to kickstart next autumn, the online celebration for the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of Confucius Institute at Karaganda State Technical University in Kazakhstan and the inauguration of Kazakhstani President Tokayev.
This past week, Chinese mass media reported on the 5th China - Kazakhstan Economic and Social Research Forum held at Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics (ZUFE), and a lecture delivered at the Kyrgyz National University by China’s Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Du Dewen.
This past week, Chinese national media reported on the establishment ceremony of the joint venture company between BGI Genomics and Uzbekistan, the granting of the zero-tariff regime for 98 percent of the current taxable products from 10 less-developed countries including Afghanistan, the unveiling of an anniversary book “Kazakhstan - China: three Decades of Good Neighborly and Mutually Beneficial Cooperation” in Astana, the second forum of “China + Central Asia” (C+C5) format taking place in Beijing, and the prospects of Kazakhstan to start transporting oil via BTC pipeline in 2023.
This past week, Chinese media reported on the speech at an Embassy Press event in China delivered by Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to China on October 31, the establishment of the Kazakhstan Research Center in East China Normal University on November 3, and the issuance of China-Uzbekistan Silk Road Archaeology stamps in Northwest University on November 4.
The past week, Chinese media reported on the congratulatory telegrams sent by Central Asian officials on the occasion of Xi Jinping’s re-election as the General Secretary of the CCP for a third five-year term, Kazakh President receiving congratulatory telegrams on the occasion of the nation’s Republic Day, Foreign ministers of the Republic of Korea and the five Central Asian States attending a regional forum in the port city of Busan to boost economic and security cooperation, and on Friday, People’s Daily reported on Kazakhstan’s plan to develop renewable energy.
