On October 18, Kazakhstan's government announced that to ensure sustained economic growth, more than 10 GW of new sources of electricity will be required by 2035. (People's Daily) As of today, there are more than 140 renewable energy facilities in the Republic of Kazakhstan with a total capacity of about 2,300 MW, and their share in the entire power generation is 3.7%. Moreover, there are plans to commission 48 additional RES objects with a total capacity of more than 850 MW over 3 years. According to the target indicators, by 2025 the share of RES in the total generation should reach 6%. Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov pointed out that the growing energy demand and the need to reduce the sector’s negative impact on the climate is a global dilemma, for the solution of which it is necessary to find a balance. According to him, although the country is witnessing renewable electricity growth, more than 80 percent of energy still comes from fossil fuels. Therefore, Kazakhstan’s government actively seeks international cooperation to accelerate the development of a new energy industry. People’s Daily notes that Chinese enterprises have always supported the development of Kazakhstan’s renewable energy industry and the China-Kazakhstan cooperation in the field of renewable energy has yielded fruitful results. Their cooperation in the new energy industry has dramatically alleviated the problem of power shortage in local areas of Kazakhstan. In addition, Kazakhstan plans to introduce “green coal” technology, by developing and implementing emission reduction and utilization technologies at coal-fired power plants.
