On Wednesday, March 13, CCASC will host a roundtable discussion on contemporary "China — Central Asia relations: Connectivity, Trade, Diplomacy, and Security", at 14:30 in Hall No. 220, Valikhanov Building, KIMEP University Campus.
The event will feature speakers Temur Umarov, Fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, who will discuss the contemporary political, diplomatic, and security aspects of China and Central Asia relations, and Xiaotong Zhang, Academic Director of CCASC and Professor at KIMEP University's Department of International Relations and Regional Studies, who will address connectivity, trade, and economics.
About the Speakers:
Temur Umarov is a fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. His research is focused on Central Asian countries’ domestic and foreign policies, as well as China’s relations with Russia and Central Asian neighbors.
A native of Uzbekistan, Temur Umarov has degrees in China studies and international relations from the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, and Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). He holds an MA in world economics from the University of International Business and Economics (Beijing). He is also an alumnus of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center’s Young Ambassadors and the Carnegie Endowment’s Central Asian Futures programs.
Prior to joining Carnegie, Umarov worked as an assistant to a deputy director in the Chinese automobile manufacturer Lifan Group's CIS representative office, where he was responsible for the development of business to Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

Xiaotong Zhang is the Academic Director at CCASC. He is a Professor in the Department of International Relations and Regional Studies at KIMEP University and serves as the Editor-in-Chief of “Economic Diplomacy”, a peer-reviewed international journal. Previously, he founded the Wuhan University Centre for Economic Diplomacy during his tenure as a Professor of International Relations at Wuhan University. His primary research areas include economic diplomacy, geopolitics, European studies, and US-China relations. His most recent publications are “New Economic Statecraft: China, the USA, and the EU” and “Linkage Power Europe: the EU’s Trade Negotiations with China”. He earned his Ph.D. from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium.
